Is this black mold behind our bedroom wardrobe?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black speckles spreading along the corner of our bedroom wall, right behind the wardrobe. It's on an interior wall and the room always feels a bit damp, especially since our AC unit is directly opposite it. My husband thinks it's just dirt, but I'm worried it's something more serious. How urgently do we need to get this professionally checked, and should we be sleeping in that room in the meantime?

Black speckles spreading on an interior wall with a persistent damp feeling is a strong indicator of a mold issue, not just dirt. The location behind a wardrobe restricts airflow, and the AC unit opposite likely creates a significant temperature differential that leads to condensation—a perfect environment for mold growth in Dubai's humid climate.

You should have this inspected professionally within the next week. The combination of visible growth and a constant moisture source means it will not resolve on its own and will likely continue to spread. While many common household molds primarily cause allergy-like symptoms (congestion, sneezing), the specific type and concentration matter for health risks.

Until it's assessed, it's prudent to avoid sleeping in that room, especially if anyone has respiratory sensitivities, asthma, or a weakened immune system. Keep the door closed and the AC running to help manage humidity levels. Do not attempt to scrub it yourself, as this can aerosolize spores and worsen indoor air quality.

A proper inspection will identify the moisture source—often condensation from AC overcooling or a hidden plumbing leak—and include lab analysis of a tape-lift sample to confirm the mold species. This evidence-based approach is critical, as the term "black mold" is often misapplied; the actual risk level depends on the species identified.
