AC mold spreading in Dubai villa: DIY or professional?« Back to Previous Page

The AC unit in my bedroom in our Jumeirah villa has been leaking a bit, and now there's a patch of black mold on the wall behind the wardrobe. I tried wiping it with vinegar, but the smell is still there and it seems to be spreading. Is this something I can handle myself with a stronger cleaner, or do I need to call a professional mold removal company here in Dubai?

That black patch behind your wardrobe is likely Stachybotrys, a toxigenic mold that commonly grows from chronic AC condensation leaks in Dubai's climate. Vinegar often fails on porous surfaces like drywall, as it doesn't kill the roots or address the moisture source.

For a leak-related, recurring patch, DIY is not recommended. The high humidity here allows mold to penetrate deep into building materials. You need to identify and fix the AC drain line clog or insulation issue first; otherwise, it will return regardless of cleaning. Scrubbing visible mold can also aerosolize spores into your bedroom air.

Professional remediation is advised for three reasons: the potential toxicity of the species, the hidden moisture source, and Dubai Civil Defence code requirements for proper containment during removal in occupied homes. A reputable company will use HEPA vacuums, antimicrobials, and negative air machines to prevent cross-contamination.

Request a company that provides a verifiable lab report identifying the mold type and confirming post-remediation air quality is within UAE standards. This is the only way to know the health risk is resolved.
