Can we remove wardrobe mold ourselves or need a pro?« Back to Previous Page

Our family villa in Jumeirah has been feeling really humid since the heavy rains in February. We’ve just discovered a large patch of black mold in the back of the walk-in wardrobe, and my husband has been waking up with a stuffy nose for a week. Is this something we can tackle ourselves with bleach from ACE, or is it absolutely necessary to call in a professional mold remediation company here, and roughly how much would that cost for a single room?

It depends on the size and cause. A small surface patch (less than one square foot) caused by a single spill can often be handled carefully by a homeowner. However, a large patch discovered after the recent heavy rains suggests a deeper moisture issue, likely from condensation or a hidden leak in the villa's structure, which is common in Dubai's humid climate.

For a large patch, especially with health symptoms like a stuffy nose, a DIY approach with bleach is not recommended. Bleach only removes surface discoloration and does not kill the mold roots penetrating porous materials like drywall or wood. It can also release harmful fumes in an enclosed space and fails to address the underlying moisture problem, guaranteeing the mold will return.

Professional remediation is strongly advised here. They will first identify and resolve the source of the moisture—be it a leak, condensation from poor insulation, or HVAC issues. Then, they will contain the area to prevent spores from spreading, safely remove contaminated materials, and use HEPA filtration to clean the air. This is crucial to properly resolve the health symptoms and prevent recurrence.

While I cannot quote specific prices, the cost for a single room is influenced by the extent of the infestation, the need for containment, and the required repairs. A professional inspection will provide a clear scope and an accurate estimate. Given the climate, investing in a dehumidifier for that room post-remediation can help maintain a healthy humidity level and prevent future growth.
