Clean black mold myself or call a professional?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing for a couple of weeks and I just pulled their wooden wardrobe away from the wall in our Mushrif villa and found a huge patch of black, fuzzy mold. It must have been growing behind there since the humidity spiked last month. Is this something I can safely clean with bleach myself, or do I need to call in a professional company to handle it?

That black patch is a common find in Dubai villas, especially after a humid period. The wall behind furniture becomes a condensation point, creating a perfect environment for mold. Whether you can handle it depends on the size and your family's health.
For a small patch (under one square foot), a DIY approach is possible. Wear an N95 mask, gloves, and goggles. Scrub with a detergent solution, not just bleach—bleach only removes surface discoloration and can worsen indoor air quality. The goal is to physically remove the fungal mass. Afterwards, address the moisture source; this is critical. Ensure the room's AC is functioning correctly to manage humidity and that there’s adequate air circulation behind the wardrobe. However, given the description of a "huge patch" and that your children are already showing respiratory symptoms like prolonged coughing, professional assessment is strongly advised. Extensive growth can indicate a deeper moisture issue within the wall cavity. Disturbing it without proper containment, such as HEPA-filtered negative air machines, can aerosolize spores and spread them throughout your home, potentially worsening your kids' symptoms. In Dubai's climate, simply cleaning the visible mold without diagnosing and rectifying the underlying cause—like a hidden condensation leak or insufficient AC dehumidification—means it will almost certainly return. A professional inspection can identify the moisture source, assess the full extent, and safely execute a remediation plan that includes containment and air scrubbing to protect your family during the process. |
