How to permanently stop mold in a humid closet?« Back to Previous Page

Our family villa in Jumeirah has a recurring mold problem in the master bedroom closet, especially on the outer wall. We just cleared it out a few months ago, but with the humidity rising again, I can already see those black spots coming back on our shoes and bags. I run the AC constantly, but it doesn't seem to help that one enclosed space. What’s the most effective long-term solution to stop this mold from returning every season?

Recurring mold in a closet on an outer wall points to a consistent moisture source that running the AC cannot overcome. In Dubai's climate, this is often a combination of high external humidity and a thermal bridge in the wall, causing condensation inside the enclosed space.

The most effective long-term solution requires addressing both the moisture and the environment. First, identify if there's an external leak or seepage from the villa's facade, which is a common issue here. Ensure the closet is not completely airtight; installing louvered doors or ventilation grilles allows air from the air-conditioned room to circulate, preventing the stagnant, humid microclimate where mold thrives. Placing a small, battery-operated dehumidifier or desiccant bags inside can help, but they are a temporary measure.

For a permanent fix, a professional inspection is crucial. They will use a thermal imaging camera to locate the precise condensation point (the thermal bridge) and a moisture meter to quantify the problem. The solution may involve improving external waterproofing, adding internal insulation to the wall to prevent condensation, or installing a dedicated ventilation system for that area. Simply cleaning it repeatedly will not stop the cycle. A proper remediation plan based on diagnostic data is the only way to achieve a long-term result in our high-humidity environment.
