Is bedroom black mold urgent for our health?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a large patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet, right on the wall. It wasn't there during my last clean-out a few months ago, but with all the humidity lately it's really spread. My husband has been waking up with a stuffy nose and a cough that goes away once he's at the office. How urgent is it that we get a professional to handle this, and could it already be affecting our health?

The black mold in your bedroom is likely a contributing factor to your husband's symptoms and should be addressed with urgency. The recent high humidity in Dubai provides the perfect conditions for rapid mold growth, especially in enclosed spaces like closets where air circulation is poor. His stuffy nose and cough that resolve outside the home are strong indicators of a mold-related reaction.

For a patch that is large and appeared quickly, a professional inspection is recommended to identify the moisture source—often a small plumbing leak, condensation from an AC duct, or seepage from an external wall. Simply cleaning the visible mold without fixing the underlying cause will lead to its swift return.

In the UAE's climate, year-round AC use can create significant condensation issues if units are not properly maintained or if drainage lines are blocked. A professional can use moisture meters and thermal imaging to find the source, which is often not visible. They will also determine if the mold has spread into the wall cavity, which is common.

While you await inspection, improve air circulation in the room by running a fan, keep the closet doors open, and ensure your AC is set to a consistently low humidity level. Do not attempt to scrub it yourself, as this can aerosolize spores and worsen air quality. The goal is to identify and eliminate the moisture problem first, then safely remove the contaminated material.
