Can I remove this spreading AC mold myself or need professional?« Back to Previous Page

The AC unit in our bedroom has been leaking a bit for a couple of months, and now I’ve spotted a patch of black, fuzzy mold on the wall behind the wardrobe. I tried wiping it with vinegar, but the smell is still there and it seems to be spreading. Is this something I can tackle myself with a stronger cleaner, or do I need to call a professional mold remediation company here in Dubai?

Black mold growth from an AC leak is a health concern and requires a methodical approach, especially in Dubai's humid climate where it can regrow quickly. Given it’s spreading and you still detect an odour after cleaning, a DIY approach is no longer sufficient.
The core issue is that the visible mold is likely just the surface manifestation. The leak has almost certainly allowed moisture to penetrate the wall structure behind it, where a larger, hidden colony is thriving. Vinegar and surface cleaners cannot address this. In our climate, with constant AC use creating condensation, the moisture source must be permanently stopped first. For a situation involving structural materials like drywall and a persistent leak, professional remediation is strongly advised. Reputable companies follow IICRC standards for containment and removal to prevent spores from spreading to other parts of your home during cleanup. They will identify and rectify the moisture source, safely remove and dispose of contaminated porous materials like drywall, and HEPA-vacuum the area. After remediation, a post-testing verification by an independent lab is crucial to confirm spore counts have returned to safe levels. For a recurring issue from an AC unit, a full system inspection and hygienization is also recommended to prevent future growth inside the ducts. |
