Safely removing mold from kids' bedroom?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing for a couple of weeks and I suspect it’s from the black spots I just found behind the wardrobe in their bedroom. We’ve lived here in Jumeirah for two years and I never noticed it before, but with all the humidity lately it seems to have spread. What’s the safest way to get rid of it without exposing my family to more spores?

Black mold in a child's bedroom requires a cautious approach, especially in Dubai's humid climate which accelerates its growth behind furniture. The safest first step is to isolate the area: keep the kids out of the room and close the door. For a small patch (under one square foot), you can clean it yourself with a solution of white vinegar or a dedicated mold-cleaning product, wearing an N95 mask and gloves. Never use bleach, as it doesn't kill the roots and can worsen airborne spores.

However, with children experiencing respiratory symptoms and the mold hidden behind a wardrobe, professional assessment is strongly advised. The wall cavity or backing may have a more significant moisture issue and contamination you cannot see. In Dubai, remediation companies should follow DM guidelines and use containment procedures to prevent spore spread. They will identify and address the moisture source—often condensation from AC units or a small leak—which is critical to prevent its return. A post-remediation verification test from an independent lab is the only way to confirm the space is truly safe.
