Safest way to remove black bathroom mold without chemicals?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing more than usual and I’ve just spotted some black speckles growing in the grout between the tiles in our master bathroom shower. It’s the most humid room in our villa in Jumeirah. What’s the safest and most effective way to get rid of this mold without using harsh chemicals that could affect my family?

Bathroom mold in Dubai is common due to high ambient humidity and condensation from showers. For surface mold on grout, a paste of baking soda and white vinegar is effective. Scrub it on, let it sit for 15 minutes, then rinse. For persistent spots, a diluted solution of 3% hydrogen peroxide (one part peroxide to two parts water) in a spray bottle works well; let it sit for 10 minutes before scrubbing.

The primary goal is to control moisture. Run the bathroom exhaust fan for at least 30 minutes after every shower and ensure it vents outside, not into the attic. Wipe down wet tiles and glass doors with a squeegee. In villas, check that your AC is adequately dehumidifying the space; if the room constantly feels damp, the system may be undersized.

If the mold returns quickly after cleaning, has a musty odor, or if the grout is soft and crumbling, the growth may be behind the tiles. In such cases, DIY cleaning only addresses the surface, and professional inspection is recommended to assess the wall cavity. For families with persistent respiratory issues, a lab test can identify the mold species to confirm it is a common, less hazardous type like Cladosporium and not something more concerning.
