Black mold in bedroom: call building or mold company?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a huge patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet, right on the wall. It definitely wasn't there a month ago. I think the recent humidity might have something to do with it, but I'm worried it could be worse, maybe a leak from the adjacent bathroom. What is the best way to handle this properly in Dubai – should I call my building management first, or go straight to a professional mold removal company?

Start by reporting it to building management immediately. This is standard procedure in Dubai, as they are responsible for the building's structural integrity and potential leaks from common pipes or the exterior. They will investigate the adjacent bathroom for hidden leaks, which are a common cause in our climate. Document your report with photos and email for a paper trail.

Given the sudden appearance and size you describe, a professional inspection is also wise. The high humidity, combined with year-round AC use, creates perfect conditions for mold from even minor, undetected moisture. A certified inspector can use moisture meters and thermal cameras to pinpoint the exact water source—whether it's a leak, condensation, or rising damp—which is crucial for a permanent fix.

For removal, if the area is larger than one square meter, professional remediation is strongly advised to prevent spore dispersal. DIY bleach solutions are ineffective and can worsen air quality. Proper remediation involves containment, HEPA filtration, and antimicrobial treatment of the area. A company with its own microbiology lab can also test the mold type to confirm it is not one of the more hazardous species, providing peace of mind. Your building management should handle the structural repair, but the safe removal of the mold itself often falls to the tenant.
