Should I call a pro for AC mold in Dubai?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in my apartment in Jumeirah Village Circle seems to be blowing out a really damp, earthy smell, especially when it first turns on. I just noticed a few small black spots along the edge of the vent in the living room. With the humidity creeping back up, should I be calling a professional to deal with this immediately, or is it something I can clean myself this weekend?

A damp, earthy smell from your AC, especially at startup, combined with visible black spots, strongly indicates microbial growth within the system. Given Dubai's high humidity and our year-round reliance on AC, this is a common but serious issue. The interior evaporator coil cools air below the dew point, creating constant condensation—a perfect environment for mold and bacteria if not kept clean.

For small, visible spots only on the vent grill, a DIY clean with a microfiber cloth and a solution of warm water and white vinegar can be a temporary measure. However, the smell originating from the unit means the contamination is almost certainly deep inside the ductwork and on the coil itself, which you cannot safely or effectively access without professional tools.

You should call a professional. Improper cleaning can aerosolize spores and spread contamination throughout your apartment. A proper remediation involves isolating the system, using HEPA vacuuming, and applying EPA-approved biocides. Crucially, only a company with in-house microbiology lab capabilities can verify the species (some are more hazardous than others) and provide documented proof that the treatment was successful, not just cosmetic. This is a health investment, especially with humidity rising.
