How to safely check and clean suspected mold?« Back to Previous Page

We’ve lived in our villa in Mirdif for 2 years and just noticed what looks like black spots spreading along the bottom of the wall behind the kids' wardrobe. With all the humidity lately, I'm worried it's mold, and my youngest has been sneezing a lot more. What's the safest way to check if it's harmful and clean it without putting my family at risk?

The black spots behind the wardrobe are likely mold, a common issue in Dubai villas due to high humidity and condensation from constant AC use. First, put on a mask and gloves. Lightly mist the area with water to suppress spores, then wipe a small section with a cloth dipped in a diluted detergent solution. If the stain wipes away easily, it's likely surface dirt. If it remains and has a musty smell, it is mold.

Do not attempt a large clean-up yourself. Disturbing it can release a high volume of spores. For a confirmed or suspected patch larger than one square meter, a professional inspection is the safest route. They use moisture meters to find the water source and can take samples for lab analysis to identify the species, which determines the health risk, especially since your child is showing symptoms.

The root cause is almost always excess moisture. In Mirdif, check for a leaking AC drain pipe inside the wall, rising damp from the foundation, or condensation from the cold wall meeting humid air. Simply cleaning the visible mold is a temporary fix; the problem will return within weeks without addressing the water issue.

For small, confirmed patches, a solution of white vinegar or a proprietary mold cleaner can be effective. Always dry the area completely with a fan afterwards. Ensure the room is well-ventilated during and after the process. If the wall remains damp, a dehumidifier can help maintain a dry environment and prevent recurrence.
