Is this toxic mold from my AC making us sick?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in our bedroom in our Jumeirah villa has been leaking a bit for a couple of months, and now we're all waking up with stuffy noses and sore throats. I just pulled the corner of the carpet back near the unit and saw some black and green speckles on the underside and the concrete floor. I'm really worried this is making us sick. Is there a specific type of mold inspection company I should call here that can test for toxic mold, or will a general cleaning company be enough?

The symptoms you describe—stuffy noses and sore throats—are common reactions to mold exposure, particularly from an AC unit that has been leaking. The black and green speckles are a strong visual indicator of mold growth, which thrives in the damp, dark environment created by the leak. Given Dubai's high humidity and our year-round reliance on AC, this situation is unfortunately common.

You should call a professional mold inspection company, not a general cleaner. A proper inspection involves more than just looking; it requires air and surface sampling to be analyzed in a microbiology lab. This identifies the specific mold species present (e.g., Cladosporium, Aspergillus) and determines if it is a type known to produce mycotoxins. A general cleaning company will not have this diagnostic capability and may only address the visible growth, missing the spores that have spread into the AC system and air.

For a villa in Jumeirah, the inspection should include the AC unit's internal evaporator coils and drip pan, the affected carpet and underlay, and the subfloor concrete, which can wick up moisture. The goal is to define the full extent of contamination to guide an effective remediation plan. Any company you contact should be able to explain their testing methodology and provide a detailed report with lab results. This scientific approach is the only way to know what you're dealing with and to ensure it is properly resolved.
