Can we clean closet mold ourselves or need a pro?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in our bedroom has been leaking into the closet for a while, and now we've found a big patch of black mold on the back wall and on some of our shoes. My wife has been waking up with a stuffy nose and headaches for the past month. Is this something we can clean ourselves with bleach from ACE, or do we absolutely need to call in a professional mold remediation company, and what would that likely cost for a small area like a closet?

A professional inspection is strongly recommended in this case. The combination of a persistent water leak, visible mold growth on building materials (the wall), and health symptoms (stuffy nose, headaches) suggests a more serious issue that likely extends beyond the surface you can see. Bleach is ineffective on porous materials like drywall and can actually worsen indoor air quality by releasing irritants without killing the root mold.

In Dubai's climate, AC leaks are a primary cause of indoor mold. The constant high humidity means any moisture from a leak is readily absorbed by building materials, creating an ideal environment for mold to thrive inside wall cavities. The health symptoms you describe are consistent with mold exposure.

For a small closet, remediation should focus on three steps: stopping the water source (fixing the AC leak), removing contaminated porous materials (the affected drywall section and damaged shoes), and HEPA vacuuming/cleaning of non-porous surfaces. This process requires containment to prevent spores from spreading into your bedroom.

The cost for a professional job varies significantly based on the extent of the hidden damage. Reputable companies provide a detailed scope of work and cost after an inspection. Look for providers who follow IICRC S520 standards for mold remediation and can provide before/after testing to verify the area is truly clean.
