Can I remove recurring black shower mold myself in Dubai?« Back to Previous Page

The grout between the tiles in my master bathroom shower has started turning black, and it’s spreading up the wall. We’ve lived here for 2 years and just noticed it getting much worse over the last few weeks, especially since the weather got more humid. I’ve tried wiping it with bleach spray, but it just comes back after a few days. Is this something I can fix myself with a stronger cleaner, or do I need to call a professional cleaning service here in Dubai?

That black mold in your shower grout is extremely common in Dubai due to our high humidity and constant AC use, which creates ideal conditions for its growth. While you can attempt to treat it yourself, its recurring nature suggests a deeper issue that bleach alone cannot fix.

Bleach only removes surface discoloration but doesn't kill the root structure of the mold embedded in the porous grout. For a persistent problem, you need a two-part approach: remove the visible growth and then address the moisture source. Start by scrubbing with a dedicated, acid-based grout cleaner (not just bleach) and a stiff brush. After cleaning, improving ventilation is critical; run the bathroom exhaust fan for at least 30 minutes after every shower and wipe down wet surfaces to remove standing water.

If the mold returns within a week despite these efforts, the moisture is likely coming from behind the tiles. In many older Dubai buildings, failed grout or a compromised sealant allows water to seep into the wall cavity, creating a hidden reservoir of mold that you cannot see or clean. In this case, a professional inspection is necessary to assess the extent of the damage. A proper assessment, sometimes involving moisture meters, can determine if the tiles and grout need to be removed to remediate the source.
