Is black mold under silicone causing my kids' cough?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing more than usual and I’m getting really concerned. I just pulled back the silicone sealant around our shower in our Jumeirah Park villa and found a ton of black, fuzzy mold growing underneath it. It’s been so humid lately that the bathroom never seems to fully dry out. What’s the safest way to remove this myself without exposing my family to harmful chemicals or spores?

Black mold under silicone sealant is a common cause of respiratory irritation, including persistent coughing, especially in children. The humid Dubai climate, combined with shower steam and year-round AC use that can trap moisture, creates an ideal environment for mold growth behind seemingly intact seals.
For safe removal, first keep the bathroom well-ventilated and have your family stay out. Wear an N95 mask and gloves. Cut out all contaminated silicone with a utility knife—cleaning over it is ineffective as the mold's root system permeates the material. After removal, scrub the exposed area with a solution of white vinegar or a diluted bleach cleaner (1 part bleach to 10 parts water) to kill surface spores. Let the area dry completely for at least 24-48 hours using a dehumidifier or fan; this is critical. Only then apply a new, high-quality, mold-resistant silicone sealant. Given the extent you've described and the health symptoms, a professional inspection is strongly advised. Hidden mold can spread in wall cavities, and improper DIY removal can aerosolize a high concentration of spores. A certified inspector can conduct air quality tests to identify the spore types and concentration, which is the only way to confirm if it's the direct cause of the cough and to ensure remediation is complete. In many Dubai villas, the underlying cause is poor bathroom ventilation, which also needs to be addressed to prevent rapid regrowth. |
