How to safely remove black mold from wall and couch?« Back to Previous Page

Our villa in Al Barsha has been feeling really humid since the heavy rains a couple of weeks ago. I just pulled our leather couch away from the wall to clean behind it and found a huge patch of black, fuzzy mold spreading up the back of the wall and the couch itself. The room constantly smells damp no matter how much I air it out. What’s the safest and most effective way to clean this myself without it coming right back?

Black mold requires careful handling. For a large patch on both a wall and porous material like leather, the safest first step is a professional inspection to identify the species and the moisture source. In Dubai's climate, the recent rains likely increased humidity, and the wall may have a condensation issue from AC or a hidden leak that must be fixed first.
For the wall, a solution of white vinegar or a diluted bleach mixture (1 part bleach to 4 parts water) can be applied to the affected area. Wear an N95 mask, gloves, and eye protection. Scrub the area, let the solution sit for 15 minutes, then wipe clean and allow it to dry completely. For the leather couch, do not use bleach. Wipe the mold off with a soft cloth dampened with a mild soap solution or a leather cleaner, then dry it thoroughly in a well-ventilated area. However, mold can penetrate deep into porous materials, and professional remediation is often needed to salvage them. The room's constant damp smell indicates a persistent humidity problem. After cleaning, run a dehumidifier and ensure your AC is functioning correctly to manage indoor moisture levels, which are critical year-round in the UAE. If the mold covers an area larger than one square meter, or if anyone in the household has respiratory issues, DHA guidelines strongly recommend hiring a certified remediation company to ensure it is handled safely and to prevent regrowth, which is highly likely if the underlying moisture issue isn't resolved. |
