Black bathroom grout and smell: DIY or professional fix?« Back to Previous Page

The grout between the tiles in our master bathroom in Jumeirah Park has been turning black for a few months now. We try to scrub it, but it just comes back worse, and there's a constant damp smell no matter how much I run the exhaust fan. I'm worried it's getting behind the walls. Is this something I can handle with cleaners from ACE, or do I need to call in a professional mold removal company, and what kind of cost am I looking at for a bathroom this size?

The black grout returning after cleaning and the persistent damp smell suggest an active mold colony, likely behind the tiles. In Dubai's high humidity, this is a common issue, especially if the exhaust fan isn't powerful enough or the grout was improperly sealed, allowing moisture from showers to seep into the wall substrate.

A DIY approach with off-the-shelf cleaners from ACE will only remove surface discoloration, not the root cause. For a recurring problem with an odor, a professional inspection is warranted to assess moisture levels within the wall and identify the extent of the growth. This is critical in Jumeirah Park villas, where concealed plumbing leaks can also be a hidden contributor.

A reputable remediation company won't just clean; they will identify and fix the moisture source, remove the affected materials, and treat the area with EPA-approved biocides. They should provide before-and-after lab results to confirm the space is safe. For a standard master bathroom, the scope and cost depend entirely on how far the mold has spread behind the tiles, which can only be determined by an on-site assessment.
