Is mold behind sofa causing my kids' cough?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing non-stop since the summer humidity started, and I’m getting really worried. I pulled out the sofa in our villa’s living room in Jumeirah to find a toy and discovered a big patch of black, fuzzy mold spreading on the wall behind it. We run the AC constantly, but the room still feels damp. Could this mold be causing their coughs and what’s the safest way to get rid of it with the kids around?

Black mold growth behind furniture in a humid climate like Dubai is a very likely cause of persistent coughing and respiratory irritation in children. The constant AC use creates significant temperature differences, leading to condensation on cooler walls, especially behind large items like sofas where air doesn't circulate. This trapped moisture is a perfect breeding ground for mold, whose spores become airborne and are inhaled.

For the safety of your children, do not attempt to clean a significant patch yourself. Disturbing it will aerosolize a high concentration of spores. The safest first step is a professional inspection to identify the mold species and the moisture source. In many Dubai villas, this can be a leaking pipe within the wall or condensation from thermal bridging.

Remediation with kids present requires strict containment. Professionals will seal the area with plastic sheeting, use HEPA-filtered negative air machines to prevent spore spread, and safely remove the contaminated materials. All surfaces are then HEPA-vacuumed and treated. Air scrubbers may be needed afterwards to clear any residual spores from your home's air. Once the mold is remediated, address the humidity with a dehumidifier or by ensuring your AC system is properly sized and maintained to adequately remove moisture from the air.
