Black mold behind wardrobe causing coughs: DIY or professional?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and I suspect it’s from the black spots I just found behind our bedroom wardrobe in our Jumeirah villa. We’ve lived here for 2 years and just noticed it after moving the heavy furniture, and it’s been humid lately. Is this something I can tackle myself with a vinegar spray or do I absolutely need to call one of those professional mold removal companies?

Black mold can indeed cause respiratory irritation like coughing, especially in children. The humidity in Dubai, combined with condensation from AC units and lack of air circulation behind furniture, creates a perfect environment for it.

For a small area (under one square meter), a DIY approach can work. Use a solution of diluted detergent or white vinegar, not bleach, as it only removes the color. Scrub the area, dry it completely, and address the moisture source—this is critical. However, if the mold covers a larger area, has a strong musty odor, or has penetrated porous materials like drywall or the wardrobe backing, professional remediation is necessary. DIY efforts can often disturb the spores, spreading them further.

Given the symptoms and the fact it was hidden, a professional inspection is strongly advised to assess the full extent and identify the exact moisture problem. Reputable companies use containment, HEPA filtration, and lab analysis to confirm the mold type and ensure it's properly removed, which is vital for your family's health. Look for providers with certified technicians and who can provide before-and-after testing data for verification.
