Is damp storage mold causing my kids' cough?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing non-stop for the past two weeks and I'm getting really worried. I pulled out some winter clothes from the storage room in our Jumeirah villa, which always feels a bit damp, and found a bunch of dark green spots on a few sweaters and the wall behind the rack. I’m panicking that this is the cause. How quickly and safely can I get this cleaned with a 3-year-old and a baby in the house?

Dark green spots in a damp storage room are very likely mold and a probable cause of the persistent cough, especially for young children. The high humidity and condensation common in Dubai villas create an ideal environment for mold growth, particularly in closed-off spaces like storage rooms that lack consistent AC airflow.

For immediate safety, isolate the area by keeping the door closed and do not attempt to clean it yourself, as this can aerosolize spores and worsen the air quality. With a baby and toddler, the priority is to minimize their exposure to these airborne particles. A professional inspection is strongly advised to assess the extent of growth, including within walls or under flooring, and to identify the mold species. Companies with their own microbiology lab can provide the most accurate identification, which is crucial for determining the appropriate remediation plan.

The cleaning process for a confirmed case involves containment of the area with physical barriers and negative air pressure to prevent cross-contamination, followed by HEPA-filtered air scrubbing. All affected porous materials, like the clothing and possibly the drywall, will need to be safely disposed of. The underlying cause of the dampness must also be addressed to prevent recurrence.

The entire remediation process for a contained area can typically be completed within 1-3 days by a certified team. It is safest for the family to be out of the home during the active remediation phase. Before reoccupying the space, the company should provide verifiable clearance testing to confirm spore counts have returned to normal indoor levels.
