Can I fix recurring black bathroom grout mold myself?« Back to Previous Page
|
Our master bathroom in the Marina apartment doesn't get much sunlight and the grout between the wall tiles has started turning black in the corners. It's been slowly getting worse since the humidity kicked in a couple of months ago. I tried scrubbing it with bleach spray but it just comes back a week later. Is this something I can fix myself with a better product or do I need to call a professional cleaning company?

Recurring black mold in bathroom grout is common in Dubai, especially in low-sunlight areas like Marina apartments. The high humidity and constant air conditioning create ideal conditions for mold growth through condensation. For surface-level mold on non-porous tiles, a thorough DIY approach can often manage it.
Start by using a dedicated fungicidal cleaner, not just bleach. Bleach only removes surface discoloration but doesn't kill the roots penetrating the porous grout, which is why it returns. Apply the product, let it dwell for the recommended time, and scrub with a stiff brush. Crucially, improve ventilation by running the bathroom exhaust fan for at least 30 minutes after every shower and wiping down wet surfaces to remove condensation. A small dehumidifier can also help. If the mold returns aggressively within weeks or you notice a persistent musty smell, the issue may be deeper. Mold can grow behind the tiles if there's a hidden moisture leak from plumbing or a failed sealant. In such cases, especially in a rental property, a professional inspection with moisture meters and possibly lab testing is warranted to identify the source. This is the only way to achieve a permanent solution for deeply embedded growth. |
