Black mold in Mirdif closet: DIY clean or call a pro?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black spots forming in the corner of our master bedroom closet in Mirdif. It's been incredibly humid the last few weeks and I'm worried it's spreading. Is this something I can tackle myself with bleach and a scrub brush, or do I need to call in a professional mold inspection company to make sure it's not a bigger issue behind the walls?

Black spots in a Mirdif closet are a classic sign of condensation mold, which is very common here due to our high humidity and constant AC use creating temperature differentials. For a small, visible patch (under one square foot), a DIY clean with a vinegar solution (not bleach, as it doesn't kill the roots and can worsen indoor air quality) can be effective.

However, the fact it formed in a closet suggests poor air circulation and potential moisture behind the wall. Scrubbing the surface may not address the root cause. Given it's been spreading over two humid weeks, a professional inspection is strongly recommended to check for hidden moisture within the wall cavity using tools like a borescope or moisture meter. In Dubai's climate, unchecked moisture can lead to widespread colonization quickly.

A proper inspection will identify the species to confirm it's not the more hazardous Stachybotrys (true "black mold") and provide a remediation plan. For verifiable results, ensure the company you hire can provide a lab report from an accredited microbiology lab, which is the standard for science-driven assessment. This approach confirms the issue is fully resolved, not just cosmetically cleaned.
