Should we treat closet mold ourselves or call a pro?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a few small black spots in the corner of our master bedroom closet where we store our winter clothes. It's been incredibly humid lately and the AC in that room seems to struggle. My husband has started waking up with a stuffy nose every morning and I'm worried it's connected. How urgently do we need to get a professional to deal with this, or can we handle it ourselves with a vinegar solution first?

Small mold spots in a closet are common in Dubai's humidity, especially in less-ventilated areas with struggling AC. For a patch smaller than one square foot, you can often handle it yourself. However, given your husband's symptoms, a professional inspection is strongly advised to identify the root cause and any hidden growth.

Start by mixing a solution of white vinegar and water (1:1 ratio) or using a dedicated mold remover. Wear an N95 mask and gloves. Wipe the area thoroughly, but never mix chemicals or use bleach, as it can worsen indoor air quality. The key is not just cleaning the visible spots but addressing the moisture source. Your struggling AC unit is likely creating condensation, providing the water mold needs to grow.

In this climate, a professional inspection is wise. They use moisture meters and thermal cameras to find hidden dampness in walls or under flooring that DIY methods miss. For health-related concerns, a lab test can identify the mold species, which determines the appropriate remediation strategy and confirms if it’s the cause of the stuffy nose. This scientific approach is crucial for resolving the problem, not just the symptom.
