What's the best local product to kill bathroom ceiling mold?« Back to Previous Page

We’ve lived in our Jumeirah apartment for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black spots growing along the grout on the ceiling above our shower. The ventilation isn't great in there and it's been so humid lately. What's the most effective product I can find locally to kill this and stop it from coming back?

Bathroom ceiling mold in Dubai is common due to the high ambient humidity and condensation from showers. For a small patch on grout, a simple DIY solution is often effective. Locally, you can find chlorine-based mold and mildew removers at stores like ACE Hardware or Carrefour. Look for a spray containing sodium hypochlorite (bleach). Apply it directly to the affected grout, let it sit for 10-15 minutes, then scrub with a stiff brush and rinse.
However, killing surface mold is only a temporary fix if the underlying moisture issue isn't resolved. The root cause is almost always poor ventilation. Ensure your bathroom extractor fan is working correctly and run it for at least 30 minutes after every shower. Wiping down wet surfaces on the walls and ceiling after use can also measurably reduce the moisture that mold feeds on. If the mold covers a large area (generally more than one square meter), has penetrated the ceiling board, or returns quickly after cleaning, a professional inspection is advised. In apartments, hidden leaks from upstairs units or within the building structure are a frequent culprit that DIY products cannot address. A certified inspector can identify the species and moisture source, which is critical for a permanent solution in our climate. |
