Is black mold in my closet dangerous or DIY cleanable?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a cluster of black spots in the corner of our master bedroom closet. It's on the wall that faces the outside, and with all the humidity we've had lately, it seems to be spreading. What's the most effective way to clean this myself, or is it already too serious and I need to call the building management?

Black mould in a closet on an exterior wall is a common issue in Dubai's climate. The high humidity, combined with cold spots from AC and poor air circulation in closets, creates ideal conditions for growth.

Whether it's dangerous depends on the extent and your health. Small, surface-level patches often cause irritation like sneezing or worsened allergies, especially for sensitive individuals. If the cluster is larger than one square meter, or if anyone in the household has asthma or a weakened immune system, the risk is higher and professional assessment is advised.

For a small, new patch, DIY cleaning can be effective. Wear an N95 mask and gloves. Scrub the area with a mixture of white vinegar and water or a dedicated mould remover. Do not use bleach, as it only removes the colour and can push spores deeper into porous surfaces like drywall. After cleaning, thoroughly dry the area and use a dehumidifier or a desiccant like silica gel in the closet to prevent recurrence.

However, since the mould is on an exterior wall and spreading, the underlying cause is likely condensation or a minor leak within the wall cavity. DIY cleaning only addresses the surface symptom; the moisture source remains. In many Dubai buildings, this requires building management to investigate and repair the external seal or insulation to prevent ongoing dampness.

For a definitive answer on the mould type and the hidden moisture level, a professional inspection with a thermal moisture meter and possibly lab analysis is the most reliable path. This identifies if the wall itself is wet, which is a bigger concern than the visible spots.
