Is bathroom grout mold urgent and can I fix it?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a few small black spots appearing in the grout between the tiles in our master bathroom shower. It's in a corner that doesn't get much sun and always stays a bit damp. With the humidity rising lately, I'm worried it will spread quickly behind the walls. How urgent is it to deal with this, and is it something I can handle myself or should I call a professional company?

It's urgent to address now before it spreads behind tiles, which becomes a costly structural repair. Dubai's high humidity accelerates mold growth, turning a surface issue into a hidden problem within weeks.

For a few small spots on grout, you can likely handle it yourself. Start by scrubbing the area with a paste of baking soda and water or a dedicated grout cleaner. Improve ventilation by running the bathroom exhaust fan for 30 minutes after every shower and wiping down wet surfaces to reduce lingering moisture. A dehumidifier can also help in a poorly ventilated space.

If the mold returns quickly after cleaning, appears in a large patch (over one square foot), or you notice a persistent musty smell, it indicates a deeper issue. In these cases, professional inspection is needed to check for moisture within the wall cavity. We use borescopes and moisture meters to assess the extent without unnecessary demolition, as Dubai Municipality regulations require proper containment for significant remediation to prevent cross-contamination.
