How to permanently remove mold behind sofa in humid villa?« Back to Previous Page

The wall behind our sofa in the living room of our villa in Jumeirah has these black speckles appearing on it. We noticed it after that really humid spell last month and it’s slowly getting worse, despite me wiping it down. I’m worried it’s because the room is always a bit colder than the rest of the house from the AC. What’s the best way to permanently get rid of this mold and stop it from coming back, especially with our humidity?

That black speckle pattern is a classic sign of condensation-related mold, and your observation about the cold wall from the AC is the exact cause. The constant temperature difference between the cold interior wall and Dubai's humid air causes moisture to condense, creating the perfect environment for mold growth behind furniture where air circulation is poor.

For a permanent solution, wiping it down is insufficient and can spread spores. The process requires addressing both the existing growth and the moisture source. Start by moving the sofa away from the wall to allow air to circulate. For removal on a non-porous painted wall, a solution of diluted white vinegar (1 part vinegar to 1 part water) can be effective; apply it, let it sit for an hour, then scrub and dry the area thoroughly. Do not use bleach, as it only removes the surface color and can worsen indoor air quality.

However, the only way to ensure it doesn't return is to eliminate the condensation. This is the critical step. You must improve air circulation behind the sofa—even leaving a few inches of space can help. Consider using a small, discreet fan to move air in that corner. Also, check that your AC unit is not set excessively low, as a larger temperature differential creates more condensation. Ensuring your AC drains properly and that its filters are clean will also help manage indoor humidity.

For persistent or large-scale growth (over a few square feet), or if it returns after your efforts, a professional inspection is strongly recommended. They use moisture meters to find hidden dampness and can perform lab tests to identify the mold species, which dictates the correct remediation protocol. In villas, the issue can sometimes stem from a minor external leak or insulation problem that isn't immediately obvious. Proper remediation involves containment, HEPA vacuuming, and antimicrobial application to address the root cause you've identified.
