Can I clean bedroom closet mold myself or hire a pro?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in our bedroom closet has been leaking for a while, and now I've found a patch of black mold on the back wall and some of our shoes. We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed it, and my wife has been waking up with a stuffy nose and headaches for the past month. Is this something I can clean myself with bleach from ACE Hardware, or do I need to call a professional mold remediation company?

The black mold you describe, likely Stachybotrys from persistent moisture, is a health risk requiring professional assessment. Your wife's symptoms are a common reaction to mycotoxins released by this type of mold, especially in a confined space like a bedroom.

In Dubai's climate, simply cleaning the visible patch is insufficient. The underlying cause is the AC leak, creating constant high humidity that allows mold to thrive and spread inside the wall cavity. Bleach is ineffective on porous surfaces like drywall and can worsen airborne spore dispersal.

For a leak of this duration and with health symptoms present, a professional inspection is strongly advised. They will identify the full extent of contamination, fix the moisture source, and safely remediate following DHA-approved protocols to prevent recurrence. DIY attempts often miss hidden growth, leading to ongoing health issues and property damage.
