How to safely clean mold and prevent AC leaks?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in my bedroom closet has been leaking a little bit for a while, and now I’ve found black fuzzy mold growing on the back wall and on a couple of my leather bags stored in there. I got the leak fixed, but I’m worried it will just come back. What’s the best way to clean this safely and prevent it from happening again, especially with our humid weather?

For a small area, use a solution of one part white vinegar to four parts water or a diluted detergent; never use bleach as it only removes the colour and leaves the root structure intact. Wear an N95 mask, gloves, and eye protection. Scrub the wall thoroughly, then dry it completely with a fan. For porous items like leather bags, a professional restorer is often needed, as mould can permanently damage the material.
Preventing recurrence is critical in Dubai's climate. The repaired leak is the first step, but the hidden moisture in the wall cavity and the closet's stagnant, humid air are the real issues. After cleaning, use a dehumidifier or a powerful desiccant in the closet for several days to draw out residual moisture from the structure. Ensure the closet is well-ventilated; leaving the door ajar can help. The AC unit itself must be checked for proper drainage and potential condensation issues, which are common year-round here. For situations involving stored items, structural walls, or any area larger than a square meter, a professional inspection is strongly advised. They use moisture meters and thermal cameras to find hidden dampness you can't see and can perform lab analysis to identify the mould type, which informs the correct remediation protocol. This is the only way to ensure the problem is truly resolved and won't return. |
