Urgent to clean black mold in closet for health?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a few small black spots in the corner of our bedroom closet. It’s on the wall that faces the outside. The AC vent is right above it and it's been running constantly, but I’ve been feeling more congested and headachy in the mornings for the last couple of weeks. How urgent is it that we get this professionally cleaned, and could this be the cause of our symptoms?

The black spots in your closet and your symptoms are likely connected. In Dubai's climate, exterior walls are prone to condensation from the constant AC use, creating the perfect damp environment for mould to grow. The mould spores from that location are then circulated by the AC vent directly above it, which can explain your morning congestion and headaches.

It is advisable to have this inspected professionally. While small, the proximity to the AC duct means spores are being distributed into your bedroom air. A proper inspection can confirm the mould type—some are more problematic than others—and assess if there's hidden growth within the wall cavity. For health-sensitive individuals, even common moulds like Cladosporium can cause the symptoms you describe.

Addressing the source is critical. A professional will not only clean the visible mould but also identify and rectify the moisture source, which is often a thermal bridge or insulation issue in the wall. Without fixing the underlying cause, the mould will return. The Dubai Municipality has guidelines for building maintenance that address such dampness issues.

For your immediate actions, avoid disturbing the area (do not wipe or spray it yourself) and consider keeping the bedroom door and closet closed to limit spore circulation until it can be assessed. A company with microbiological testing can provide a definitive diagnosis and a targeted remediation plan.
