How to clean and prevent mold behind bedroom furniture?« Back to Previous Page

The wall behind our wardrobe in the master bedroom has patches of black and green mold. We just pulled the furniture out to rearrange the room and were shocked. It’s been really humid lately and that wall feels slightly damp to the touch. What's the best way to clean this ourselves and how can we stop it from coming back?

The mold behind your wardrobe is a common issue in Dubai, especially during humid periods and on exterior walls where condensation can form. The dampness suggests a persistent moisture problem that must be addressed first.

For cleaning small patches, wear an N95 mask and gloves. Scrub the area with a solution of white vinegar or a dedicated mold-cleaning detergent. Avoid bleach, as it only removes the color and doesn't kill the roots. Allow the wall to dry completely. However, if the mold covers more than a square meter, the wall feels structurally damp, or you smell a persistent musty odor, this indicates a larger problem that requires professional assessment to identify the moisture source.

To prevent recurrence, you must control the humidity. Ensure your AC is functioning correctly and set to a consistent, cool temperature to reduce indoor moisture. Leave a small gap between large furniture and the wall to allow for air circulation; 2-3 inches is ideal. Consider using a moisture-absorbing product like a desiccant box behind the furniture. For a long-term solution, investigate if the dampness is due to external water seepage, which is a building envelope issue the property owner should address.
