How to safely remove black mold from shower grout?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing a lot lately, and I’ve just spotted patches of black mold along the grout in our master bathroom shower. We live in a villa in Jumeirah, and with the humidity this past month, it seems to have gotten much worse. What’s the safest and most effective way to clean this myself without using harsh chemicals that could affect my family?

Black mold in shower grout is common here due to Dubai's high humidity and condensation from air conditioning. For small patches, you can clean it safely without harsh chemicals.

Mix a paste of baking soda and water or white vinegar. Scrub the grout with a stiff-bristled brush, then rinse thoroughly. For persistent mold, a diluted hydrogen peroxide solution (3%) sprayed on, left for 10 minutes, then scrubbed is effective. Always wear gloves and ensure the bathroom is well-ventilated during cleaning.

The key is moisture control. Run your bathroom exhaust fan for at least 30 minutes after every shower and wipe down wet surfaces. In a villa, check that your AC system is not overcooling the bathroom, as the temperature difference with the outside humid air creates intense condensation.

If the mold covers an area larger than one square meter, returns quickly after cleaning, or is inside the wall (behind tiles), it indicates a persistent moisture issue. In these cases, or due to your children's coughing, a professional inspection is prudent to identify hidden sources and assess the spore types. A certified inspector can use moisture meters and, if needed, lab analysis to confirm the mold type and guide a targeted, effective remediation plan.
