How to permanently remove black mold and stop moisture?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet, right on the wall. I think it might be from the humidity, but it's an interior wall. I wiped it with bleach, but it came back within a couple of weeks and I'm worried about it spreading. What's the most effective way to kill the mold for good and what can I do to stop the moisture that's causing it in the first place?

Black mold recurrence after bleaching indicates an unresolved moisture source. Bleach only removes surface discoloration but doesn't kill the root structure, especially on porous surfaces like drywall. In Dubai's climate, interior wall mold often stems from condensation from poorly insulated AC ducts running within walls or a hidden plumbing leak.

For permanent removal, first identify and fix the moisture source. Check for cold spots on the wall, which suggest AC condensation. Inspect the adjacent bathroom for leaking pipes or insufficient ventilation. Running a dehumidifier in the room can help reduce ambient humidity, a common issue here.

The moldy section of drywall likely needs cutting out and replacement, as the fungal roots penetrate deeply. Simply wiping spreads spores. For areas under 1 square meter, you can carefully remove the contaminated section while containing the area with plastic sheeting. Wear an N95 mask and gloves.

For larger infestations, recurring problems, or if the source isn't obvious, a professional inspection is recommended. They use moisture meters and thermal cameras to pinpoint hidden leaks or condensation issues behind the wall, which is common in UAE villas. Remediation involves controlled removal, HEPA vacuuming, and antimicrobial treatment to prevent regrowth.
