How to remove black mold from grout permanently?« Back to Previous Page

We’ve lived here for 2 years in Jumeirah Village Circle and just noticed these black speckles growing in the grout between the tiles behind our toilet. The bathroom doesn't have a window and the exhaust fan is pretty weak, so it’s always a bit damp after showers. What’s the best way to get rid of it for good without ruining the grout?

Black mold in bathroom grout is common in Dubai's humid climate, especially in windowless bathrooms with poor ventilation. The issue is persistent because air conditioning can create condensation, and standard cleaning often only addresses surface growth.

Start by improving ventilation. Run the exhaust fan for at least 30 minutes after every shower. If it's weak, consider upgrading it. A small dehumidifier can also help reduce ambient moisture. For cleaning, create a paste using baking soda and a 3% hydrogen peroxide solution or distilled white vinegar. Scrub it into the grout with a stiff brush, let it sit for 10-15 minutes, then rinse thoroughly. Avoid bleach, as it can weaken grout and only bleaches the surface mold without killing the roots.

If the mold returns quickly or covers a large area (more than one square meter), the growth may be behind the tiles. In such cases, a professional inspection with moisture meters and possibly lab testing is needed to assess the extent. Dubai Municipality guidelines recommend addressing underlying dampness to prevent recurrence. Permanent removal requires fixing the moisture source first, then replacing compromised grout and applying a professional-grade antimicrobial sealant.
