Black mold behind wardrobe: remove myself or call professional?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing non-stop since the summer humidity set in, and I just found a patch of black, fuzzy stuff behind the wardrobe in our master bedroom. We've lived in this Jumeirah villa for two years and it’s never been an issue until now. I’m really worried about their health and don’t know where to start. What is the safest and most effective way to get rid of this ourselves, or should I call a professional company right away?

Black mold behind furniture in a humid climate like Dubai is a serious concern, especially with your children's symptoms. High humidity and condensation from year-round AC use create ideal conditions for it to thrive.

For a small patch (under one square foot), you can attempt to clean it yourself. Wear an N95 mask, gloves, and goggles. Scrub the area with a mixture of detergent and water, then disinfect with a solution of one part white vinegar to four parts water. Ensure the room is well-ventilated and keep children away during the process.

However, given the location (behind a wardrobe, indicating a hidden, stagnant air space) and the fact it’s coincided with your children's persistent coughing, a DIY approach is likely insufficient. The visible patch is often just the fruiting body; the root system can penetrate deeper into the wall. Disturbing it without proper containment can release a large number of spores into your home's air, potentially worsening the air quality and health effects.

The safest and most effective course is a professional inspection. They use moisture meters and borescopes to find the source of the moisture—often a small, unnoticed leak from an AC condensate drain pipe, a plumbing line in the wall, or ingress from humid air. They will also conduct air and surface sampling to identify the mold species and spore count, which is critical for understanding the health risk and verifying the cleanup was successful. This science-driven approach, often involving a certified microbiology lab for analysis, is the only way to ensure the problem is resolved at its root and not just superficially cleaned.
