How to treat moldy closet items and stop condensation?« Back to Previous Page

Our master bedroom closet, the one on the inside wall, has started getting this black speckled mold on the leather bags and shoes we stored there. We noticed it about a month after the weather got really humid. We run the AC constantly, but that back corner just feels damp and cold. What's the best way to treat the items and, more importantly, how can we stop the condensation from coming back in that specific spot?

The black speckles are likely mildew or mould from trapped humid air condensing on the cold interior wall. This is a common issue in Dubai, especially during humid months, when AC-cooled surfaces meet warm, moisture-laden air.

For the leather items, first move them to a dry, well-ventilated area. Wipe them down with a soft cloth dampened with a 1:1 solution of water and isopropyl alcohol (70%), then allow them to air dry completely away from direct sunlight. For severe growth, a professional leather cleaner may be needed to salvage them.

The core issue is the condensation. That cold spot indicates a significant temperature differential, likely due to insufficient insulation within the wall or a thermal bridge. Simply cleaning the mould won't stop it from returning. Start by immediately improving air circulation in the closet. Leave the doors open and use a portable dehumidifier or a small fan in the room to disrupt the stagnant, damp air. For a lasting solution, you need to address the wall's surface temperature. This often requires a professional inspection to diagnose the cause—it could be missing insulation, a leak in the AC ducting running inside the wall, or another structural issue. They can then recommend targeted remediation, such as adding vapour barrier paint or improving insulation, to prevent the surface from dropping below the dew point. Running your AC fan on the "ON" setting instead of "AUTO" can also help circulate air and reduce condensation throughout the home.
