Is DIY bleach safe for two sq ft bedroom mold?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in my bedroom has been leaking a bit onto the carpet for a while, and now I've found a pretty big patch of black mold behind the headboard. I'm in a two-bedroom apartment in Jumeirah Village Circle and my landlord is being slow to respond. I'm worried about my health and the damage getting worse. What's the realistic cost range to get this professionally cleaned and is it something I can tackle myself with bleach if the area is about two square feet?

For a two-square-foot patch from an AC leak, DIY with bleach is not recommended. Bleach doesn't penetrate porous materials like carpet backing or drywall, meaning it only bleaches the surface mold while leaving the root structure intact to regrow. In Dubai's high humidity, regrowth is almost certain without addressing the moisture source and proper remediation.

The primary risk is that you'll aerosolize spores during scrubbing, potentially worsening indoor air quality and spreading the problem. Given the mold is behind furniture and originated from a persistent AC leak, the underlying damage is likely more extensive than what's visible.

Your landlord is legally obligated under Dubai rental law (RERA) to address this, as it constitutes a habitability issue affecting health and property. A professional inspection is strongly advised to assess the full extent, identify the AC leak's cause, and provide a proper remediation plan that includes containment, HEPA vacuuming, and antimicrobial treatment, not just surface cleaning.
