AC mold in Mirdif villa: DIY clean or call professional?« Back to Previous Page
|
The AC in my bedroom has been blowing out a weird, damp smell for the past couple of weeks, and now I’m seeing small black spots around the vent on the ceiling. I’m in a villa in Mirdif and I’m worried it’s spreading inside the ducts. Is this something I can clean myself with bleach spray or do I need to call a professional mold inspection company to check the entire system?

Black spots around the AC vent with a damp smell strongly indicate active mold growth, which is common in Dubai villas due to high humidity and constant AC use. This is not typically a DIY job with bleach spray.
The visible spots are likely just the fruiting bodies; the main colony is probably growing inside the ductwork and the AC unit's evaporator coil, where humidity and condensation create an ideal environment. Bleach is surface-level, ineffective on porous materials, and its fumes can be circulated by the AC. It also doesn't address the root moisture source. For a central AC system in a villa, a professional inspection is necessary to assess the full extent of contamination inside the ducts and mechanical units. Reputable inspectors use borescopes to view inside ducts and air/ourface sampling to identify the mold species, which determines the appropriate remediation protocol. DIY attempts often spread spores further. In many cases, a full system hygienization is required, not just a surface wipe. Look for a provider that can show before-and-after data from their own microbiology lab to verify the results, as this separates credible services from those that merely spray and leave. |
