Is AC mold a DIY fix or need professional?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in my bedroom has been making a weird damp smell for the last couple of weeks, and now I can see small black spots around the vent on the ceiling. It’s my first summer in this Marina apartment and I'm worried it's mold. Is this something I can clean myself with a vinegar spray, or do I need to call a professional for the AC unit itself?

A damp smell and black spots around an AC vent in a Marina apartment strongly suggest microbial growth, likely mold, due to condensation inside the unit. Dubai's high humidity and year-round AC use create a perfect environment for this.

For the visible spots on the ceiling, a DIY approach with a vinegar or diluted bleach solution can be attempted for a small area. Wear a mask and gloves.

However, the smell indicates the problem is inside the AC unit itself, specifically in the drip pan or on the cooling coils where moisture accumulates. This is not a DIY fix. Attempting to clean it without proper tools can disperse spores further into your living space and will not address the root cause. For any internal AC issue, a professional inspection and cleaning is necessary. They use HEPA vacuums and antimicrobial coatings to treat the unit and prevent rapid regrowth. In many cases, the drain line also requires flushing to clear blockages causing the moisture buildup.
