How to treat closet mold and choose a dehumidifier?« Back to Previous Page

Our apartment in Jumeirah Village Circle always gets super humid, even when the AC is running. I’ve just spotted a few small black spots in the corner of my walk-in closet where the wall meets the ceiling. I’m terrified it’s the start of a major mold problem, especially with summer coming. What’s the best way to treat this small area and what kind of dehumidifier should I get to stop it from spreading?

That black spot is likely surface mold from condensation, common in JVC closets during humid months. For a small area (under 1 sq ft), wipe it with a solution of white vinegar or a diluted bleach mixture (1 part bleach to 10 parts water), wearing a mask and gloves. Let the area dry completely. Do not paint over it.

To prevent its return, a dehumidifier is essential. Given Dubai's high ambient humidity, especially at night, you need a compressor-based model with a capacity of at least 20-30 liters per day for a bedroom or closet. Look for a unit with an auto-humidistat to maintain levels between 45-55% RH and an auto-defrost function to handle the constant AC-cooled air.

For closets, ensure proper air circulation by not overpacking it and leaving a small gap between the wall and your clothes. If the spot returns within a week, feels damp deep in the wall, or covers more than a square foot, a professional inspection is recommended to identify a potential hidden leak or compromised wall insulation, which is a common issue here.
