Is mold from AC leak urgent to clean?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in my bedroom closet has been leaking a little for the past two weeks, and now I’ve just pulled out my winter clothes to find a bunch of them covered in black spots. It’s definitely mold. With how humid it’s getting now that summer is starting, how urgent is it to get this professionally cleaned, and could it be affecting the air we're breathing in the room already?

Yes, it is urgent. The black spots on your clothes confirm active growth, and the AC leak provides continuous moisture. In Dubai's rising summer humidity, this mold colony will expand rapidly within the closet's enclosed space and likely into the AC unit and ductwork itself.

The air in the room is almost certainly affected. Mold releases microscopic spores and microbial volatile organic compounds (mVOCs) as it grows, which can cause allergy-like symptoms—congestion, sneezing, or irritated eyes—especially while sleeping. For individuals with asthma or respiratory sensitivities, the effect can be more pronounced.

Immediate action is required. First, address the water source: shut off the AC unit and have an HVAC technician repair the leak. For the mold, professional remediation is strongly advised for a case of this size and location. Disturbing it yourself risks aerosolizing a high concentration of spores throughout your home. A proper remediation will involve containing the area, safely removing contaminated materials like the affected clothes, and using HEPA filtration to clean the air.

After remediation, a post-verification test from an independent lab is the only way to confirm the spore count in the air has returned to a safe level. Given the climate, ensuring your AC system is not harboring mold is critical for long-term indoor air quality.
