Can I clean toxic bathroom mold myself or call a pro?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and I suspect it's from the black mold that's grown all along the grout in our master bathroom shower. We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed it getting really bad over the last few months, probably because of the humidity. Is this something I can tackle with a bleach spray from the supermarket, or do I need to call in a professional mold cleaning company here in Dubai?

For small surface mold on non-porous tile and grout, a thorough DIY cleaning can be effective. Use a dedicated EPA-approved fungicidal cleaner or a solution of white vinegar and baking soda, not just bleach, which only removes surface discoloration. Scrub vigorously, ensure the area dries completely, and run the bathroom exhaust fan for at least 30 minutes after showers.

If the mold covers a large area (more than 1 square meter), has penetrated porous materials like drywall or the ceiling, or keeps returning despite cleaning, a professional assessment is needed. This is especially true given your children's symptoms, as some species like Stachybotrys (black mold) can produce irritants. Dubai's high humidity and constant AC use create perfect conditions for mold to thrive in hidden spaces, like behind walls.

A certified inspector can identify the species and its water source, which is critical for a permanent solution. They perform air and surface sampling, often sending samples to an accredited microbiology lab for analysis. This provides a clear picture of the indoor air quality and any potential health risks, moving beyond just visible cleanup. For persistent issues linked to health symptoms, this diagnostic approach is the most reliable course of action.
