How to treat and prevent mold in a Jumeirah villa closet?« Back to Previous Page

My bedroom closet in our Jumeirah villa has started to get a faint damp smell, especially on the lower part of the walls and on some of our leather shoes. We keep the AC running most of the time, but I’m worried the lack of airflow inside the closed space is causing a problem. What’s the best way to treat this existing mold and what can I do to my closet to stop it from coming back for good?

The damp smell and potential mold in your closet is a common issue in Jumeirah villas, primarily caused by high ambient humidity and condensation from your AC's cooling cycles. The first step is to inspect for visible mold growth, which often appears as fuzzy discoloration or speckling on walls, baseboards, and belongings.

For treatment, clean any visible mold on non-porous surfaces with a solution of white vinegar or a dedicated mold-cleaning product. Leather items should be wiped down with a leather cleaner and allowed to dry thoroughly away from the humid environment. Avoid using bleach, as it does not kill the root structure and can worsen indoor air quality. For persistent smells or if you suspect hidden growth inside the walls, a professional inspection with moisture meters and thermal imaging is recommended to assess the full extent.

To prevent recurrence, focus on reducing humidity and improving airflow. Leave the closet doors ajar for several hours each day to allow conditioned air to circulate. Consider installing a small battery-operated dehumidifier or moisture absorber (like silica gel packs) inside the space. For a more permanent solution, have an HVAC technician assess if your room's AC unit is properly balanced; sometimes, slight adjustments can reduce condensation. Ensure there are no hidden water leaks from adjacent bathrooms or pipes, which are a frequent culprit in villas. These steps, combined with our region's humid climate, make prevention an ongoing process rather than a one-time fix.
