How to permanently remove mold from AC-cooled bedroom?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing at night and I finally found a bunch of black spots in the corners of their bedroom closet, which is on an interior wall. We live in a villa in Jumeirah and I run the AC constantly, so I was really surprised. What's the most effective way to kill this mold for good and stop it from coming back?

Start by identifying the type of mold; black spots in a closet on an interior wall are often due to condensation from the temperature difference between the cooled room and the warmer wall cavity, not directly from the AC. In Dubai's climate, this is common even with constant AC running.

For a small area, clean it with a solution of white vinegar or a dedicated mold remover. Wear an N95 mask and gloves. Scrub the area thoroughly and allow it to dry completely. However, killing visible mold is only a temporary fix if the underlying moisture issue isn't resolved.

The permanent solution requires addressing the humidity and condensation. Improve air circulation around the closet by not overpacking it and leaving the doors ajar. Use a moisture absorber like silica gel inside. For the room itself, a standalone dehumidifier running for a few hours each day can significantly reduce ambient humidity levels that the AC cannot fully manage alone.

If the mold covers more than one square meter, has a musty odor, or returns after cleaning, a professional inspection is strongly recommended. They use thermal imaging to pinpoint hidden condensation points and moisture meters to quantify the problem, which is crucial for a lasting solution. They can also perform lab analysis to identify the mold species, which dictates the proper remediation protocol. In villas, this is often the most effective path to ensure it doesn't return.
