How to permanently fix damp wall causing mold and coughing?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and I suspect it might be related to the black spots I've just found along the bottom of the wall behind the sofa in our master bedroom. We’ve lived here for 2 years and just noticed it, but the wall feels a bit damp and it’s on the side that faces Deira Creek. What is the best way to permanently fix the moisture issue and clean this so it doesn't come back?

The damp wall and black mold are likely causing the coughing. In Dubai, walls facing water like Deira Creek are prone to moisture intrusion from high humidity and occasional driving rain. The permanent fix requires addressing the source of the water, not just cleaning the visible mold.
First, identify if the moisture is internal condensation or an external leak. Condensation often forms on cold walls behind furniture where air doesn't circulate, exacerbated by the extreme contrast between our AC-cooled interiors and outdoor humidity. A significant external leak, however, requires a building envelope inspection to find cracks or failed sealants. For a suspected leak, report it to your building management. Dubai regulations often hold them responsible for the structural integrity of the external façade. They should engage a contractor to seal the outside wall. If it's condensation, improve ventilation immediately. Move the sofa away from the wall and ensure your AC is set to a reasonable temperature (around 22-24°C) to minimize extreme temperature differences. A dehumidifier can also help manage ambient moisture. Do not attempt to clean significant mold growth yourself, especially with children present. Disturbing it releases spores. Professional remediation is advised to safely remove the contaminated material and apply antimicrobial solutions. For health concerns linked to mold exposure, a DHA-licensed clinic can provide appropriate medical advice. After the moisture source is permanently sealed and the mold is professionally removed, repaint the area with a quality anti-condensation or moisture-resistant paint to help prevent recurrence. |
