Black mold in bedroom closet: DIY or call landlord?« Back to Previous Page
|
We've lived in our villa in Jumeirah for two years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet. It's on the wall that faces the outside, and it's been feeling really damp ever since that heavy humidity we had a couple of weeks ago. What's the best way to get rid of this safely and permanently, and should I call my landlord first or just handle it myself?

Contact your landlord first. Under Dubai rental law (RERA), structural issues like dampness from an exterior wall are typically the landlord's responsibility to rectify. They are obligated to maintain the property in a habitable condition.
For a small patch, you can clean it yourself with a vinegar or diluted bleach solution, but this only addresses the surface growth, not the underlying moisture. The dampness in your closet is likely due to condensation from the temperature difference between your air-conditioned room and the humid exterior wall, a common issue in Dubai villas. Until that thermal bridge and moisture source are fixed, the mold will return. A professional inspection is advised to diagnose the root cause. They can identify if it's a simple condensation issue, a leaking pipe within the wall, or compromised waterproofing. For a permanent fix, the landlord may need to improve insulation, repair any cracks, or address the waterproofing on that exterior wall. After remediation, using a dehumidifier or ensuring adequate air circulation in the closet can help prevent recurrence. |
