How to quickly remove closet mold and prevent it?« Back to Previous Page

Our master bedroom closet in our Jumeirah villa has started to smell really damp. I just pulled out my winter clothes and found fuzzy black spots all over a few of my jackets in the back. We had that really heavy dew a couple of weeks ago and I think the humidity got trapped in there. What's the fastest way to get this cleaned and stop it from coming back?

Black mold in a closet is a common issue in Dubai, especially after periods of high humidity. The fastest way to address this is to first remove the affected items to prevent spores from spreading. For clothing, a hot wash with a mold-killing detergent will typically clean them, but some materials may require professional dry cleaning.

For the closet itself, clean all interior surfaces with a solution of white vinegar or a dedicated mold-cleaning agent. Wear an N95 mask and gloves during cleaning. After cleaning, the most critical step is to identify and correct the moisture source. In a Jumeirah villa, this is often due to high humidity and lack of air circulation. Ensure the closet is not placed against an exterior wall with a hidden condensation issue.

To prevent recurrence, improve air flow. Leave closet doors ajar and avoid overpacking. A small, low-wattage dehumidifier or a renewable desiccant like silica gel can help maintain lower humidity levels inside the enclosed space. For persistent problems, a professional inspection can identify hidden moisture sources within the wall or from AC condensation leaks, which is often necessary for a permanent solution.
