Is bedroom mold causing my family's illness??« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing non-stop and my wife is getting these awful headaches. We’ve lived in our Jumeirah apartment for 2 years and just noticed a ton of black spots growing behind our wardrobe in the bedroom, which is right next to the AC vent. I’m really worried this is making us sick. How dangerous is this type of mold and should I take my family to a doctor to get checked out?

The black mould behind your wardrobe is very likely contributing to your family's symptoms. In Dubai's climate, this is a common issue caused by condensation from AC units, especially on cold exterior walls where furniture restricts airflow. The persistent coughs and headaches are classic signs of mould exposure, which acts as a powerful irritant to the respiratory system and can trigger allergic reactions.

You should absolutely consult a doctor to address the immediate health concerns, especially for your children. Inform them about the mould discovery, as this is a critical piece of information for their diagnosis. Concurrently, the mould issue in your apartment must be professionally addressed. This is not a simple cleaning task; disturbing it incorrectly can release a massive amount of spores and make the problem worse.

The location next to the AC vent is a major concern, as the system could be spreading spores throughout the room. A proper inspection will identify the moisture source—often a combination of the AC's condensate drain line and insufficient insulation in the building envelope—and the extent of the hidden growth. Remediation involves containing the area, safely removing the contaminated materials, and applying antimicrobial treatments. For verification, post-remediation testing by an independent lab is the only way to confirm the space is safe.

To prevent recurrence, ensure there's a 2-3 inch gap between your furniture and the walls to improve air circulation. Regularly check that your AC unit is draining properly and consider having its ductwork inspected for contamination, as a compromised system can be a continual source of moisture and spores.
