Can I clean black closet mold myself or call a pro?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and I suspect it's the black stuff I've found in the corner of our master bedroom closet. We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed it after pulling out the winter clothes, probably from all the humidity. Is this something I can just clean with bleach myself or do I need to call one of those mold removal companies in Dubai?

It depends on the extent of the growth and the underlying cause. The black substance in your closet is likely mildew or surface mould, common in Dubai due to high humidity and condensation from year-round AC use. For a small patch (under one square meter), you can clean it yourself.
Mix a solution of one part white vinegar to one part water in a spray bottle; bleach is not recommended as it doesn't kill the roots and can worsen indoor air quality for a time. Scrub the area with a stiff brush, then wipe dry. Crucially, identify and fix the moisture source. It's often condensation from an adjacent cold wall or a small, unseen leak. For persistent mould, recurring growth, or if the area is large, a professional inspection is warranted to assess hidden spread within walls or the AC system, especially with your children's symptoms. Reputable Dubai-based firms use moisture meters and thermal cameras to find the source and can provide a lab analysis to identify the mould species, which is key for health concerns. Look for providers who offer this diagnostic evidence, not just cleaning. |
